"Hey we need a picture to run with this article about Facebook. I know, let's take a close-cropped shot of the computer monitor at a weird angle. Original!"

Wandered along the path outside campus to try out a new camera lens. Didn't find the FB Fox, but found some other things.

Some shots of the Aurora Borealis from my trip to Norway. We were very lucky to have clear skies over two nights. The aurora intensity was very low so I had to use a very high ISO setting to pick it up, leading a lot of the shots to be noisier than I'd have liked, but overall I'm very happy with how they came out.

Video of descending down a mooring line to the deck of the SS Thistlegorm. I didn't have a proper waterproof camera, so I got one of these plastic pouch things for my Canon point-and-shoot in a sketchy Egyptian market: http://amzn.com/B0010Y0ZNW. I was sure that water would leak inside, but that wasn't the problem - water pressure was. These pouches really only work for snorkeling, and at about 50 feet of depth the camera starts to get crushed by the pressure and you can see a fisheye effect which is actually caused by the lens getting physically distorted. At about 90 feet of depth the camera goes berserk because all the buttons are being simultaneously pressed by the pressure, and the video cuts out. So unfortunately no video clips of inside the ship :(. In the first 1:10 of the video I am putting on fins and jumping into the water while the camera is flailing around on a lanyard so it's very disorienting if you want to skip that part.

Pics from scuba diving on reefs and WWII shipwrecks around the Red Sea. Most pics by my new friend Rob who generously shared his underwater camera pics after my camera died.

View from inside the bridge of the SS Thistlegorm. Amazing shipwreck - it was a British WWII supply ship that was torpedoed by the Germans while full of supplies, so the holds have all kinds of interesting things to swim around in, like jeeps, motorcycles, guns, and even two fully intact locomotive steam engines. More pics coming soon.
